The band “MIKROKOSMOI” (Microcosms) was formed in 2009 in Corfu by two University Professors, Panayotis Kelandrias, the band’s composer and lyrics writer, and Nikos Papadimitriou, established composer and arranger, who was attracted by the songs and decided to “dress” them with his arrangements. Soon they were joined by another two musicians: Giannis Koutagiar, an experienced contrabassist with long experience both in classical orchestras and jazz bands and also a contrabass high school teacher; and Napoleon Savvanis, an inspired saxophonist and flautist who has participated in jazz bands and philharmonic orchestras, working with well-known Greek composers and singers.
In April 2009 they gave their first live performance in Corfu in front of a surprisingly vast audience, with unexpected success. Having decided to add a female voice to the group, they discovered Maria Giannikopoulou, an accomplished singer, guitarist, mandolin player and guitar high school teacher.
After a series of concerts in Athens and Corfu, they decided to record their first album. They started recording in summer 2010 in Corfu, and the album, entitled “Kathe mera opos panta” (Every day as usual), was released on 16 February 2011. Their album has attracted excellent critiques and their songs are played by numerous radio stations all over Greece. Their music belongs to the so-called “entexno” Greek song, namely to the tradition that started in the ’50s in Greece, based on setting poems or verses to music. Yet, their music is not 100% Greek. Renaissance influences, jazz overtures and interludes, and Celtic forms are combined with Greek traditional and modern sounds, producing an interesting and intriguing mixture that cannot leave any listener indifferent. Their songs talk about love, unconditional love and sacrifice. They are also deeply political, as they either criticise or mock both the political system and ordinary people’s stances and behaviour. Far from aiming at imposing ideas and thoughts on the audience, they prefer to narrate stories and fairytales and leave people to draw their own conclusions.
After a concert on 18 March 2011 in Corfu, where they presented their album, Nikos Papadimitriou left the group and was replaced by Giorgos Leousis, an excellent pianist, singer, song-writer and sound technician. Soon after Nikos' leave, Napoleon Savvanis and Maria Giannikopoulou left the band. They were replaced by the violonist Kostas Skribonis and the drummer Thodoris Gatzelis. Recently, Vasiliki Papaconstantinou, an amazing singer and accordeonist joined the band.
Their journey is going on. What they carry in their luggage is their love for music, people and life and their hope to welcome as many co-travellers as possible in their quest.
